This series is comprised of a plethora of material including correspondence, diaries, notebooks, press clippings and articles related to her interests in the arts, conservation, feminism and travel.

Series 2: Irene Coates research papers.
This series is comprised of a variety of material related to research for her published book ‘Who’s Afraid of Leonard Woolf’, including photocopied manuscripts, research documents and articles.

BIOGRAPHY

Irene Coates was born in London in 1925. In the 1940s she lived in Cambridge running the Cambridge Drama Centre, then lived in India from 1953-56. Between 1961 and 1981 she wrote 14 plays, many of them professionally produced including by the Royal Shakespeare Company, and some performed at the Edinburgh Festival.

She migrated to Australia with her husband in 1982. Irene settled in the Blue Mountains and received a New South Wales Premier’s Community Service Award for fostering the arts in the area. She was Writer in Residence (Drama) at University of Western Sydney Nepean in 1998. She published four books, including ‘Who's Afraid of Leonard Woolf: a case for the sanity of Virginia Woolf’, 1998; ‘Claudia’s India’, 1988; ‘Don’t Panic – Paint!: a woman painting guide’, 1984; and ‘Claudia’s War’, 1983. Before returning to the UK in 2004, she donated her papers and the books used to research her biography ‘Who’s Afraid of Leonard Woolf’ to Jessie Street National Women’s Library. This collection is known as the Irene Coates Special Collection.
