The papers of Lorna May, part of the Women’s Archive, later known as the Canberra Women’s Archive, were deposited with the Women’s Archive on July 17, 1984. Conditions of access were that the papers were to be shown to women only. They were received by Jessie Street National Women’s Library (JSNWL) in a type 1A Archive box labelled Ms 31 Box 70 in July 1993. Most of the papers relate to the Abortion Law Reform Association (ALRA) and Preterm. Many of the papers have Beryl Henderson’s name on them consequently it may be assumed they were inherited from her. Most of the papers comprising loose leaf and bound papers in typescript were contained in manila folders. As they were in no discernible order when received by JSNWL they have been arranged into series for ease of access. File no 56 is in original order. |

One three paged handwritten undated letter from Dorothy Nolan who appears to have connections with Preterm. ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORY / BIOGRAPHY<br/><br/>The Canberra Women’s Archive was started early in 1982 by a small group of students at the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra. It was supported, although not funded, by ANU. The collection documents the history of the second wave feminism movement in community women’s groups in Canberra. It comprises the records of thirty-five community women’s organisations, which were established in the ACT during the 1970s and 1980s. Personal papers of some of the women involved with these groups are included in the collection. In 1993 it became impossible for the Canberra Women’s Archive to continue to house the collection due to lack of funds. Mary Hutchison and Frances Sutherland donated the material to JSNWL. Conditions of the donation were that the collection was to be kept together and not subsumed into a major collection because of its unique characteristics.<br/><br/>Lorna May’s papers are part of the Canberra Women’s Archive. More research needs to be done to determine the context in which Lorna May’s papers were created and their relationship to the work undertaken by her. However, most of the papers in this collection relate to the Abortion Law Reform Association (ALRA) and Preterm Clinic. Many papers have Beryl Henderson’s name on them, consequently it may be assumed they were inherited from her. <br/><br/>Included in the collection is a document ‘Memories of Lorna May’ written by WEL member and friend, Shirley Kral. The document was sent to the Library by Lorna’s son, Peter Knaus, and provides anecdotes of Shirley’s friendship with Lorna and their shared passion in women’s issues. Shirley writes that Lorna’s membership of the Humanist Society sparked her interest in abortion reform; Lorna was a member of Women’s Liberation in Canberra and the Women’s Electoral Lobby.
