Summary: HISTORY The Women's Action & Information Group (WAIG) is a not for profit community-based organisation, established in 1983 that is committed to achieving social justice for women. WAIG was initially known as the Lane Cove Women’s Safety Group which began by organising self-defence courses as a means of empowering women in the community following a series of sexual assaults in the local area. WAIG aims to connect and support women by offering a diversity of activities, including A discussion program to cover a wide range of topics of interest to women and covering social, cultural, political and economic issues as well as regular book reviews An evening book group An annual seminar on a range of subjects Community representation on community committees Information and referral support Over time WAIG has maintained a significant participation in the women’s movement. Series 3: WAIG Newsletters, 1986-2008
Four folders of Newsletters comprise this series. WAIG's Newsletters were published several times a year to provide details of WAIG's activities. These records also offer community perspectives through local contributors and promote networking opportunities for women.
A gap exists in this series. There are no Newsletters for 2004, 2005 or 2006.

Series 4: Publicity and Newspaper Articles, 1986-2011
This series comprises newspaper clippings occasionally collected when WAIG or its members were mentioned in the print media. Although this information is able to be accessed from published sources, the series gives insight into the prevailing political landscape which gave the group impetus and focus for action.

BOX 3 CONTENTS

Series 5: Planning Committee Minutes, 1987-1995
This series records the meeting minutes of the Planning committee which functioned to plan the activities of the Group, including programs and community participation, as well as communicating and responding to the community generally in relation to women's interests in health, safety and education.
Planning Committee meetings usually took place monthly.
Four manila folders hold the Minutes, which are recorded on A4 typewritten and handwritten sheets in chronological order and are dated from January 1987 to August 1995.

Series 6: Steering Group Minutes, 1996-2013
This series records the minutes of Steering Group meetings which were conducted approximately four times each year. The Steering Group managed projects, programs and membership to develop WAIG and its work in the community. This Committee produced WAIG's annual seminar; assisted with funding applications; facilitated members on community committees; promoted links with the community; and liaised with national groups and bodies on behalf of WAIG.
Committee membership comprised of up to 13 women, both WAIG members and non-members, with a quorum of 7, with a minimum of 4 WAIG members.
Four manila folders hold the Minutes, which are recorded on A4 typewritten sheets in chronological order and are dated from December 1996 to February 2013.

Series 7: Annual General Meeting Minutes, 1986-2012
This series records the minutes of Annual General Meetings which were open for all members to attend. Details recorded were attendance, apologies, adoption and matters arising from previous meeting minutes, Office Bearers' reports and election of officers for the next year.
The minutes are held in six manila folders and are recorded on typewritten A4 sheets in chronological order, dated from November 1986 to November 2012.

Series 8: WAIG Lobbying, 1987-2004
This series is comprised of correspondence initiated by WAIG. It represents a variety of issues affecting women, such as changes in legislation, sexist advertising, human rights in war, equal opportunity matters, as well as local community housing. Many individuals and bodies have been lobbied, including Members of Parliament, local community leaders and corporations.
These records are generally in the form of loose sheets which are held in three manilla folders They have been created in handwritten and typescript format with some copied documents present. News cuttings and other related published material are also included.

Series 9: Programs, 1987 – 2012
This series comprehensively documents one of WAIG's primary functions, programs for women. The series is comprised of term program sheets setting out the planned activities for weekly Monday morning sessions. A great diversity of topics, book reviews, invited speakers, seminars and discussion groups make up the session programs.
The records are generally loose pages in typescript held in three folders and filed chronologically.

Series 10: General correspondence, 1987-2010
One manilla folder of typewritten loose sheets comprises this series. It contains diverse material that relate to WAIG's communications and is arranged in chronological order.

BOX 4 CONTENTS

Series 12: Grant Applications, 1987-2013
This series is comprised of eighteen manilla folders containing documentation associated with WAIG grant applications. Grants were predominantly provided to WAIG by Lane Cove Municipal Council each financial year, although funding was also received from other organisations. Each grant comprises application, approval and evaluation documents. The material is usually typewritten, some handwritten and is arranged in chronological order.

Series 13: WAIG Common Seal Rubber Stamp
This series contains one item: a rubber stamp customised with the words 'Lane Cove WAIG Inc Common Seal' which would have been used in association with an inking pad to leave a physical impression on paper. Official documents executed and issued under the organisation's common seal signified the authority of the organisation.
