Summary: Administrative History: Following the demise of the National Working Party on the Portrayal of Women in the Media (NWPPWM) in 1993, during 1993 – 1994 Helen Leonard and her friend, journalist and writer Anne Deveson, consulted with women’s organisations, interested individuals and women working within media industries. The overwhelming response was based on the understanding that community attitudes are used as a benchmark by media industries and policy decision makers, and the need for women to have access to resources and channels of influence in order to be able to have their say and to be heard by the image makers and government decision makers. Those consulted supported the establishment of a new organisation dedicated to the development of a media ethic within Australia, and to provide a national focus for the issue of the portrayal of women in the media. This resulted in Helen Leonard forming and establishing the National Women’s Media Centre (NWMC) in Sydney on 4 July 1994 with membership open to interested women and organisations from all sectors. By the end of 1994, NWMC branches had been established in five States and Territories. Aside from the issue of women’s rights and portrayals in the media, the NWMC also supported various political, media and socio-economic campaigns such as ‘Support the ABC’, ‘Free Tibet’ and ‘Net Censorship’. In 1998 Helen Leonard produced the National Women’s Media Directory. The NWMC ceased operations in 2003. (Sources: Helen Leonard papers and Wikipedia)
