Summary: ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORY The Women’s Media Working Group was a shortened version of what was the National Working Party on the Portrayal of Women in the Media, established by the Federal Government. Senator Margaret Reynolds, Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for the Status of Women, announced in 1988 that a national working party would be established to bring together the advertising industry and community groups in a bid to achieve a more positive and realistic portrayal of women in the media. Helen Leonard was a member of the Working Group, representing the National Women’s Consultative Council. It was a 4-year plan and the first meeting was convened in February 1989. The First National Working Party (NWP I) worked effectively to change industry and community attitudes to the portrayal of women in advertising. The first meeting of the Second National Working Party (NWP II) on the Portrayal of Women in the Media was held on 1 July 1991. The Terms of Reference were dated July 1991 – July 1993 and were expanded to enable the consideration of the portrayal of women in the media generally. (Final Report issued 1993 titled “The Missing Story: A Gender Study of Media Content” JSNWL Reference: Q302.23082 POR).
