The poster suggests that in helping defeat Germany, women were really defending themselves. Depicts a woman with arms raised, her clothing torn and right breast exposed. Two children lie dead on the round at her feet, while the town behind her burns. John Samuel Watkins (1866-1942) was a British-born printer who conducted his own art school in Sydney for many years. His appointments included foundation councillor of the New South Wales Society of Artists, 1895 and Trustee of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, 1932-42.
